Template for businesses

Performance Check for Power Apps.

Product language: German. An English edition is planned.

Review and rate your canvas apps and make targeted improvements to speed them up: 64 checkpoints in seven areas, an Excel workbook that automatically analyzes and prioritizes, a report template, and a handbook that explains every review step. This helps you identify where your app is losing time and use measurements to demonstrate what the optimization achieved.

01When the check pays off

Slow apps don't get used.

The Performance Check gives your team a clear method: measure, review, rate, improve, and document the result. No prior knowledge of performance optimization is required; the method draws on experience from many optimized apps.

The app is too slow

Startup takes a long time, lists load sluggishly, and the spinner keeps turning when saving. The check shows what is causing it and what helps most.

You have taken over an app

A service provider has changed, or the person who built the app is no longer there. The check quickly gives you an overview.

Before the big rollout

Your pilot team is expanding to hundreds of users. Check whether the app stays fast with more data and more users accessing it.

As a regular review

Data volumes grow, and the platform keeps evolving. With the same workbook, you review your apps on a fixed schedule.

02The package

Three files, one complete check.

You receive a ZIP package with all files, ready to use immediately and for any number of your own apps.

Handbook (PDF)

Step-by-step procedure, using the Power Apps tools correctly, measuring correctly, and all checkpoints with review steps, criteria, actions, and examples.

The sheets of the workbook

  1. Fact sheetInformation about the app. The information on the data sources determines which checkpoints count
  2. Measurement logIndividual measurements, three times each, with median and metrics from Monitor and App checker, before and after
  3. ReviewAll 64 checkpoints with review steps, criterion, and action
  4. AnalysisResults for each area with a traffic light status indicator, a chart, and a top 10 list
  5. Action planAll outstanding items, automatically sorted by priority; completed items are removed

03How it works

In six steps to a result backed by data.

The workbook guides you from measurement to report. It automatically calculates results, traffic light statuses, and priorities.

  1. Prepare

Fill in the app fact sheet, clarify access, and define the app's most important processes.

  2. Measure baseline values

Measure startup, screen changes, search, and saving three times each, read metrics from Monitor for a fixed period and counts from Power Apps Studio at the time of measurement, and record everything in the measurement log.

  3. Review

Go through the checkpoints area by area and rate each one as "Met," "Partially met," "Not met," or "Not relevant."

  4. Analyze

The analysis shows results for each area with a traffic light status indicator, as well as the overall result.

  5. Plan and implement actions

The action plan sorts all outstanding items by priority. Set responsibilities and deadlines, then carry out the actions.

  6. Remeasure and report

Remeasure under the same conditions, record the result in the review report, and plan the next review.

04The checkpoints

64 checkpoints in seven areas.

From the platform through data retrieval, startup, and formulas to SharePoint, Dataverse, SQL Server, and operations. The workbook automatically excludes checkpoints for data sources your app does not use from the rating. Here are all questions at a glance; review steps, criteria, and actions are in the package.

05A look inside

This is how each checkpoint is structured.

Background, review steps using the Power Apps tools, a clear criterion, and a specific action, often with a formula example. Here is one complete checkpoint as it appears in the handbook.

P17

Does App.OnStart contain only what is really needed for startup?

High impactMedium effortAll apps

Complex formulas in App.OnStart delay startup and data loading. By default, OnStart does not block, so the first screen can already appear while OnStart is still running. The formulas on this screen may then access variables that OnStart has not yet set. A call to Navigate in OnStart (no longer supported by Microsoft), on the other hand, forces the app to process OnStart completely before the first screen appears.

How to check

  1. Select App in the tree view and read the formula in OnStart.
  2. In Live monitor, count the data calls before the first screen and read their duration.
  3. If available, read the start screen's "Time to interactive" value in Monitor.

Met if

OnStart does not load large amounts of data and contains only steps without which the app cannot start.

Action

Define the first screen with App.StartScreen, define constants as named formulas, and load data only on the screen that needs it, ideally directly from the filtered data source. Anything loaded in OnVisible runs again each time the screen opens, so load only limited amounts of data there. Use Concurrent to group independent data requests.

09Questions and answers

Frequently asked questions

What distinguishes the check from the free guide?
The guide "Power Apps Performance: 50 tips" explains what makes a canvas app fast. The Performance Check turns this into a review: 64 checkpoints with review steps and criteria, a workbook that weights and analyzes your rating and sorts the actions by impact and effort, a measurement log for before and after, and a report template.
Which apps is the check suitable for?
For Power Apps canvas apps with any data source, for example SharePoint, Dataverse, or SQL Server. Many checkpoints also apply to custom pages in model-driven apps.
What prior knowledge do I need?
You should know Power Apps Studio and be able to read formulas. Every review step is explained in the handbook. For some points, such as network, gateway, or database, your IT department can help.
How many apps may I review?
As many of your own apps as you like. The company license allows all employees and other persons acting on behalf of the purchasing company to use the product. Affiliated companies, such as subsidiaries, need their own license. For each app, simply create a copy of the workbook.
May service providers use the check with clients?
External service providers may use the check on behalf of a company that has purchased the license, provided they use it exclusively to review that company's own apps. If you want to use the check as a consulting firm with your clients, you need a consultant license. It is available on request; just contact me.
Which programs do I need?
For the workbook, you need Microsoft Excel 2016 or later or Microsoft 365 on Windows or macOS, or Excel for the web. For the report template, you need Microsoft Word 2016 or later or Microsoft 365. You also need a program for reading PDF files. The workbook sheets are protected without a password so that formulas are not accidentally overwritten.
How do I receive the files and an invoice?
You buy through my sales partner Digistore24 (Digistore24 GmbH, Hildesheim, Germany). Digistore24 is your contractual partner for the purchase, receives the payment, and sends you the invoice by email. The VAT treatment depends on your company's registered office and the details provided during checkout. Immediately after payment, you receive the link to download the ZIP package. It is valid for 30 days and allows up to 10 downloads, so please save the files right after your purchase. For questions about payment and invoices, Digistore24 support will help; for questions about the content, I will.
How up to date is the content?
All information has been checked against Microsoft's documentation (as of November 2026). Microsoft continuously develops the Power Platform. The version and the date are shown on the cover page of the handbook.
Are later updates and individual consulting included?
You acquire the version stated on this page. There is no entitlement to later updates. Personalized consulting and the review of your app are not included in the purchase price; I offer the app analysis for that. If the delivered version is defective, your statutory rights in the event of defects apply.
